 Amlwch Industrial Heritage Trust (AIHT)

The AIHT was established in 1997 with the Marquess of Anglesey as its patron, as a charity and company limited by guarantee. Its’ remit is to conserve the industrial heritage of Amlwch Port and Parys mountain for future generations to enjoy.

Gareth Wyn Jones is a retired university professor with a background in plant eco-physiology, including heavy metal tolerance, and biological chemistry. He served a Chief Scientist to the Countryside Council for Wales, Director of CAZS- Natural Resources at UW Bangor and the founder of the WISE-network. He has and continues to serve on number of voluntary bodies in Wales such as the National Trust, Cynnal Cymru, Bardsey Island Trust as well as overseas . His primary interest is now in the relationship between sustainable natural resource use and community and rural development.

David Jenkins
is a past chairman and one of the founder members of the trust. He trained as a geologist and ended up as senior lecturer in soil science at Bangor University, where his research interests focused on pedogenesis, mineralogy and geochemistry. He became increasingly interested in the application of geosciences in archaeology, becoming a Trustee and chairman of the Gwynedd Archaeological Trust. Since retirement he also reverted to his original fascination in old metal mines and inevitably gravitated to those on Mynydd Parys in particular, where he negotiated the regaining of access to the underground mines, subsequently exploring and recording the extensive 18th-19thC workings and also excavating and researching those of the Bronze age.

Brian Hope is secretary and one of the founder members of the trust, Brian is a retired aeronautical engineer who spent the earlier part of his career designing aircraft and missile systems and later as a consultant mechanical engineer and surveyor. His interest in industrial heritage was realised during the final year of his Maths & Technology Open University degree whilst studying Victorian and pre Victorian engineering. This led to his involvement with the Welsh Mines Preservation Trust, working on the Pearl engine house on Parys mountain in 1995, and a realisation that there was a range of industrial buildings in need of conservation. Brian has written two authoritative books on the industrial history of Amlwch.
