Historical links to Avoca , Ireland

There are many similarities between the mining legacies of Avoca and Amlwch and therefore much to share and capitalise on in the future.

Geologically, both areas share the ‘lower Palaeozoic’ age host rocks consisting of volcano-sedimentary piles. Moving forward to the beginning of the late 18th century, Charles Roe & Co who had already discovered the ore deposits on Parys mountain, acquired the Avoca mines in 1767 upon the lapse of their mining lease on Parys mountain.

The resulting development of the copper mining industry led to communities with very similar social and cultural profiles and both areas are left with a legacy including tangible remnants of the past, in their buildings, ruins, mine workings, and scarred landscape. Their histories are also well documented and this creates a opportunity for heritage tourism, community and rural development.
